Summer 2014 Begins

For the sanity of everyone, but probably more so me, we have kept schedules the same since school has been out. Blake is officially finished with residency, having met all the requirements to graduate. He's still required to attend conference in the morning with the other residents and attendings, but stays to study all day at the library. I sleep in an hour and wake up at 7 instead of 6...an hour makes such a difference! I go to the gym at 9, then we have been trying to plan out activities for the day. I had to take this picture of Kayden after he had fallen asleep one night. He has to have this book by him when we goes to bed...it's a book all about cars and planes. He loves it!
Sweet Mylee lost another tooth...the one next to her two front teeth. We were so proud of her because she pulled it out all by herself and didn't shed ONE tear!! For Mylee, this is HUGE!! The tooth fairy awarded her with a quarter that night.

I went and bought moving boxes...ahhh...this is happening!!! I'm trying not to feel completely overwhelmed by all that lies ahead between now and our move. Blake takes his test on July 10th and we leave with our moving van on July 12th. That translates into me doing must of the packing. Now would be a good time to live near family! I would love some help. I plan to ask my visiting teachers to help with child care.

The reading train at the library....so fun!!

One of Kelsey's friends invited us over to swim at their grandma's pool on Friday. It was so great!! I never take my kids swimming because I don't feel safe without Blake with me and there are not any good pools here in Lubbock...boo! Hopefully Albuquerque will do better at that. We stayed for two hours and had a great time.

Job Interview Day 3 and 4

The next day, we slept in as much as the sun would let us. We didn't have any specific plans for the day time, but thought we would continue to look around the area and get a feel for things. Faustin and Kimber suggested going on a bike ride on the path along the river. We thought that would be fun, so we got all their bikes loaded up in Faustin's truck and made it an afternoon. Like the other days, the weather was perfect and the slight cool breeze coming off the river felt so nice. Kayden loved riding in his little bike seat behind me. It was so beautiful along the trail and it was nice to see so many families out enjoying the day. There are so many areas for picnics and parks along the river path.

After our bike ride we called the Higgs and asked if it would be a good time to come over. Dr. Higgs was golfing so we missed visiting with him, but his wife told us to come on over. She was making pies for a ward party that evening. The smell of her house reminded me of Blake's mom! They had just finished a addition to their home and she was so excited about it that she asked if we wanted to see it. They had added an addition to have a main floor master bedroom. She then showed us their property and told us some good places to drive around. We thanked her for her time and left to drive around some more.

We went out by Faustin and Kimber's property again and the areas around it. We found a lot we really liked, but they were sold. There pictures are the views from the neighbor that we really liked.

The area below this house if for sale...want to say it's about 3 acres

Later that evening, we got ready for another dinner with a different set of physicians. I was more nervous for this dinner. I can't say exactly why, but it may have had to do with feeling like I needed to impress more because I was really liking this place and didn't want to mess up our chances of being offered a job. Faustin and Kimber joined us for this dinner which was a comfort. Faustin's mom had come over to watch Kayden and their kids. The place we were supposed to eat couldn't accommodate our group, so they found a different place that wasn't as ideal. I was disappointed when we were seated at a rectangle table. I knew that conversations were not going to flow as easily as the night before.  We decided to sit in the middle, Faustin and Blake on one side and Me and Kimber on the padded bench. When the other two physicians arrived (the two most senior partners), they sat on the ends of the table, their wives opposite them and next to Kimber and me. The conversations were good, but they were separate for most of the time. Once in a while the physician sitting farthest from Blake would ask both he and I specific questions. The wife that sat next to me was not super talkative or incredibly warm so I didn't find it as easy to talk to her, but she was lds and we found some commonalities to talk about. Her husband and the Dr. sitting next to Blake was a talker, so there was never a dull or awkward moment. A quiet moment did come up at the end of dinner so I took the time to thank them for dinner and in having us out to interview. I also offered them compliments on their practice and told them how much we liked the city. I wouldn't really say dinner went bad, just not as good as the night before.
We went to sacrament meeting with Faustin and Kimber the next morning, then flew out shortly after that. We left feeling excited about tricities and anxious about getting a job offer there. We won't hear any information about the job for a while, we are thinking we will hear something for sure in August. They are interviewing another guy at the end of June, who is also lds and went to BYU. It makes me worried, but I know the Lord will take care of us and if we are supposed to get this job, we will.

Kayden playing with his cars in the airport
When we got home, the girls were so excited to see us. It was nice to be home. Now we just have to wait. After arriving home I found out that Dr. Travis Peterson's wife is my distant cousin. She grew up in Farmington, NM and is a McGee. I found her on facebook and messaged her to say hi and tell her about our crazy connection and wished I could have met her. I told her how much we liked it there. It's Dr. Travis Petersen's friend that is coming to interview at the end of this month. Having this extra connection with me on top of Blake's connection with his cousin, I hope will help them in seeing us as good candidates for the position especially since it's their friend competing against us. I say they, because one thing I really like about this practice is that they see their wives as partners with them and they have every right to now the happenings of the business as the physicians so and can be involved as much as they want to be. They also have a great security net for the wives in the even that their spouse dies. Hopefully I can blog in August that we got the job...or if we are lucky, maybe July.

Job Interview Day 2

Our second day started off exciting at 4:30am, when the sun apparently rises here in the summer. I kept thinking Blake was going to be late for his interview at 8. I got up and ironed Blake's shirts and even had time to take a shower before he left. Kimber had the day planned out for me. After I got ready and she got her kids off to school, she took me around to other parts of the city that we didn't see the night before and stopped at a park in Richland right by the river where Kayden and her younger non-school age girls would play. It was so beautiful and the weather could not have been more perfect. It was almost like the Lord was convincing us, that yes, we could live here and be happy.
Kayden found some geese and started chasing them...so funny!

Isn't it pretty!? Along the river is a bike and running path that runs for miles and along the trail are many of these swings. The particular park even had a free splash pad for the kids.
When we got home from our outing in the morning, Kimber had planned a luncheon for me to meet some of her friends. It was so thoughtful and kind of her to go to such effort to help me feel welcome. I helped her cut up fruit and veggies and she prepared croissant sandwiches. Three of her friends came over and her sister Cammie came over. They were all so friendly, down to earth, and wonderful. They all couldn't say enough good things about tricities. Kimber's two girls and Kayden enjoyed popsicles in the sun that afternoon, Kayden was in heaven. After friends left, I was beat and so was Kayden. I got him to sleep watching "Planes" again and I took a nap myself. Blake showed up about an hour later. I was so excited to hear about how his day went. He said everything was better then he was expecting, the job, the area, everything. I was so excited to hear him say that because I felt the same way.

That evening Kimber and Faustin watched Kayden while we went to dinner to meet 3 of the physicians in the group. This was really his interview. Earlier in the day he did meet one of the physicians, but walked around with the CFO all that morning and got details about the practice. Dinner was held at nice restaurant right off the shoreline of the Columbia River. When we arrived, we were greeted by one of the physicians in the parking lot who recognized Blake, Dr. Shoham. We all walked in together, then were greeted by another physician and his wife in the entrance, Dr. Higgs and Janis Higgs. They were all very nice. Later we were joined by another physician, Dr. Travis Peterson. There was supposed to be one more, but they were unable to attend last minute. The dinner could not have gone more perfectly. The table was round so we were all able to communicate with each other easily. The conversations were easy and everything about our associations felt so natural. I enjoyed talking with the one wife that was there when the guys were talking doctor stuff. We found out Dr. Travis Petersen has a brother that is married to Blake's cousin. Such a small world! At the end of the dinner, Dr. Higgs (one of the most senior partners) asked in a round about way if we could make a decision on a job right now, we felt we could honestly say yes. He and his wife also invited us out to their home the next day and gave us their phone numbers and addresses....WOW!  We took them up on that offer the next day. Blake and I went back to Faustin and Kimber's house just beaming! It seriously could not have gone any better.  It was a great day!

Job Interview Day 1

Blake, me and Kayden flew out to Kennewick, Washington for Blake's 1st official interview!!! Yes people....THIS is really happening!!! We left our 3 girls with some good friends in Lubbock for the 4 days we were going to be gone. We referred by Blake's friend, Faustin who also did residency here in Lubbock, but is 3 years ahead of him. We have been so excited for this trip, wondering if it might possibly be our FINAL stopping point in this long medical journey we have been on. I had fasted the Sunday before and had been to the temple, asking for guidance and direction about the job, the area, and if it is the place where the Lords wants us to be. Kayden was our little sidekick and did so well on the entire trip. The picture above was our first layover in Denver. He was so excited about all the "brruuummms!"
Thank goodness for modern technology and fun movies like Disney's "Planes". I even go to relax and read a book I had brought!

Kayden's favorite game on the plane, opening and closing the plane windows. You know our neighbors loved us.....:S
We made it to Washington!! We are at the airport in Pasco.

Blake and Faustin had been talking about this job for years, so we have had lots of time to think about this place as being a possible stopping place for us, but not sure if there would be a job for Blake when the time came. Knowing it as a possibility we have thought about it over the years knowing it offered pretty much the perfect job, but have struggled with the fact that the climate was dry, the landscape was flat, and pretty much devoid of mountains and therefore many activities that we enjoy doing. It did however, have a river large enough to ski on and mountains were within an 1.5 drive, which gave us some hope, but all in all we were skeptical. Despite our skepticism, we knew we wouldn't know for sure about how this place would fit our family and our needs until we physically visited it. The picture above was the first thing we saw coming out of the airport. My first impression was, this doesn't seem dry, it's definitely not flat--at least to what I know to be flat, and mountains? Definitely could not call them Utah mountains, but there were many nice sized hills that offered variety and interest to the landscape. I thought wow, this place is nice and I honestly could say it was pretty in its own way.

We arrived at Faustin's house at 4:30PM. His wife Kimber, warmly greeted with us along with their 5 children.  They were so kind to invite us to stay at their house. Kimber had prepared dinner and had the evening planned out to take us around the cities (tricities). Faustin arrived about an hour later, we ate then Faustin and Kimber took us around. They drove us by the temple, up to a very tall hill/mountain that overlooked the valley of Tricities, to their property, and around different parts of the cities. Everywhere we drove, I couldn't stop thinking, "Wow this place is nice! I could see myself living here and being happy." I had visions of it being a very big city, instead if felt quaint and cozy. The population between the three cities, Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco comes to about 250,000 people, but the population is spread out along the Columbia River so driving between towns and even neighborhoods felt country-like...which I really liked. The feeling reminded me of Alpine when I was a young girl when I would go to visit my grandpa and work in his apple orchard. There were orchards and vineyards everywhere! When Faustin and Kimber took us out to the 13 acres they purchased, again I thought, Wow, this place is nice and pretty in it's own way. The area was so nice and the homes around were nicely kept with large spacious lots. Many of the other physicians in the practice own land in the same area.

Later that night we stayed up late and talked for hours. Faustin went into the nitty-gritty details about the practice and we enjoyed catching up as friends. Kayden took a while to relax, but I eventually got him to sleep while watching "Planes" on my tablet. We went to sleep that night looking forward to Blake's tour of the facilities that next day and our dinner with 3 of the physicians in the group that evening.

Last Day of School 2014!

Last day of 3rd Grade
The girls had their last day of school this week. We were all happy to see it end. We all are looking forward to a less busy schedule and having more time to do fun projects together. Unfortunately with all the rain, their field day that was rescheduled this week was canceled again due to all the mud on and around the school property. The girls were sad, but what do you do? The girls have had such a good experience at Centennial Elementary. I'm hopeful that their next school will be just as great for them next year in Albuquerque.

Last day of Kindergarten

Mylee at the entrance of her kindergarten classroom. Last time she'll ever step foot there again.

The gifts we made for their teachers. A box with a bunch of different cookies.

Kelsey had a "Bahama Bucks" class party. She is sitting next to one of her best friends Elizabeth Buckberry.

RAIN!!!

Yes people, the fact that we are getting rain, deserves a post of its very own!!! I can't even remember the last time we had rain!! It started raining Thursday evening and has continued to rain BUCKETS on and off ever since. Kelsey was in tears on Friday because they were supposed to have their field day (they call it buddy fun day), but it was rescheduled for Tuesday because of the rain. Literally there were rivers in our streets when I took them to school that day! Blake asked if school was canceled. Ha, ha, if it school were canceled for rain, Lubbock would be a place to cancel for it because rain has been so rare!! Kelsey had cinema day instead at school. For months she has been earning fake money to buy things for "Cinema day". Apparently she earned $50 dollars. I didn't realize how much that was until she came home on Friday with an entire gallon-sized bag full of suckers and pixie sticks!!! Dum dum and pixie stick wrappers have been emerging all over my house ever since!!!

Post by KCBD NewsChannel 11. Check out this link to see the rain we have been getting.

Sweet Mylee woke up Friday morning asking, "Mom, what is that noise outside!?" My reply, "That dear Mylee is RAIN!!"  Ha, ha, it's been so long we have had rain she didn't recognize the sound right off. Even our dog Bella was spazzing out. I went in the backyard to get the picture I took above and she zoomed in the house. For the life of me I couldn't get her back outside, so she hung out in her kennel in the garage for a couple of hours until I was able to coax her to the backyard again.

The two pictures below are gems I caught this week doing our normal daily routine. Also noteworthy to mention this week. I went to the mall on Saturday with ALL four of my kids....YES, I'm NUTS!! And YES, it was TERRIBLE!!! Blake has a job interview...for a REAL job, on Thursday and I'm invited to come with him. We fly out Thursday with Kayden and come back Sunday night. We are going to Kennewick, Washington. Our friends are watching our 3 girls here in Lubbock while we are gone. The group is taking Blake and I out to dinner on Friday and Saturday night and I didn't have anything business casual to wear. Luckily I found some things that I'm excited about, BUT man, shopping is so stressful!!! I feel like I don't know how to dress myself anymore with all the new styles now a days. I do like what I got though and I'm excited...NO MORE shopping for a while though!!

A gem I caught of these two daytime buddies playing on our horse Buster that Daddy made.

A carousal horse just outside the kid's club area at the gym. Kayden has to touch it every time we pass by it.

End of School Year Award Ceremonies 2014

Kelsey and Mylee had their end of school year award ceremonies this week. Kelsey got an award for being on the honor roll. She finished 3rd grade with a perfect 4.0. She's a happy, smart, spunky, talented little thing! She also got an award for numeracy/number sense (I'm going to ask her teacher what all that entails, I was surprised at this one. Every other year it's always been reading). We also got her results from her STARR test, the Texas Standardized tests that all students from the entire state take each year. She only missed 3 questions on the ENTIRE exam...SO proud of her! She has been excited to take the STARR test all year...yes I said she's been excited to take a TEST of all things!! She was so happy with her results.

Mylee did great this year in Kindergarten. She loves to learn and LOVES school. She's pictured above with her sweet teacher Mrs. Picon. Mylee got an achievement award for Math...SO proud!!! This is an area that I have always struggled in. Mylee is our deep thinker and perfectionist. She gets frustrated when she can't do something perfectly....hummm, like Mother like daughter! She is such a hard worker and so full of smiles. Kids adore her and she adores them just as much back. So thankful for my Mylee!

Kadyen's First Big Boo Boo

I have a picture of me at about this same age doing the same thing in the dryer. Wish I had a copy of it to place it here. Kayden is such a fun, happy little boy. He LOVES to play peek-a-boo. It can pull him out of a bad mood or tantrum most of the time.
At bedtime Lanaea slammed Kayden's finger in her bedroom door by accident. She was going to bed and was trying to close her door before Kayden followed her in there. I didn't see it happen, so I'm not sure exactly where his finger was when it got slammed, but it was about as bad as you can get for slammed fingers, minus getting your finger cut off. We are unsure if it was fractured. Thank goodness Blake was home when it happened! I don't handle these things too well. It's not really the blood, but the fact that my child has been harmed and the fear about how they are going to recover from their injury. I'm hopeful that his nail will grow back, but Blake said it's possible that it may not because of where his finger was slammed in the door. Time will only tell. Blake left for Denver the next morning for a Miller Review Course to cover material that may be on the board exam he takes in July. He's been gone all week. Tuesday and Wednesday were very stressful because Kayden's wound was so fresh and he kept taking off his bandages. Luckily I managed all week changing countless dressings. Just today (Sunday) I know I have changed it at least 4 or 5 times. He came out of his room this morning without his dressing on and his finger nail was gone. I'm thankful we were able to keep it on for as long as we did to help his nail heal. It's looking a lot better.
Kayden getting sweet snuggles from Dr. Dad. He cried and cried after he got hurt.

Got his ball for comfort.

May 2014 Week 3 Tidbits

To begin with, how many things can you point out that are wrong with this picture above? Yes, there are no sheets--good. And yes, Kayden is wearing girly pajamas, and why you may be asking are Lanaea and Kayden sleeping in the same bed? Well, let me explain, the sheets? Mondays happen to be my laundry day and this Monday I bit off more then I could chew and the sheets didn't make their way back to beds before evening. Kayden's pajamas? Well, you know he has three sisters and I tend to have laundry issues...apparently. Don't worry he does own boyish pajamas too. And why are they sleeping in the same bed? Lanaea got irritated by her sisters and decided to sleep in Kayden's bed without my knowledge. When I came in to put Kayden down for the night I found her in his bed so I set up his pack and play port-a-crib for him to sleep in for the night. Later that night when I came back to check on them, that pic above is what I found. My little boy is a monkey and no crib of any kind can contain him anymore so I have to lock his door so he doesn't come out of his room to get him to go to sleep. The problem is, is that he can't climb back into the port-a-crib without help, so he bunked up with his sister...girly pajamas, no sheets and all. And don't worry, Lanaea was put back in her own bed WITH sheets and Kayden got put back in his port-a-crib until I got his crib sheets back on the next day.

Other then this motherly blunder, the rest of the week went well, just busy. Blake had call on Monday and Wednesday. Monday night was a doosy with phone calls throughout most of the night keeping both of us awake for what felt like all night. I injured my arm about 3 1/2 week ago donating plasma, I know...donating plasma? Blake had been doing it too because we needed some extra cash. I was in for my second donation and they infiltrated my vein (blood essentially got into my tissues) and I got the biggest and ugliest bruise you have EVER seen on my right arm. I haven't talked about it before now because it's been quite upsetting to me, but it doesn't hurt anymore and the bruise has mostly resolved. It still has at least a week or two to go before my body absorbs the rest of the blood. Anyways, Wednesday was my first day back to lifting weights with my arms and getting back into my normal workout routine at the gym. It felt really good and I did better then I thought I would. Friday night and Saturday I paid for it though...my legs were so sore!! It was good though, it has been a while that I have been so sore and apparently whatever I did, my body needed it to get stronger. It's been just over a year since I got my gym membership and it's been such a blessing to me. I never realized before how much I love to exercise! It's such a release. I have the most amazing gym to go to too. The classes are great, but what makes it SO awesome is the free kid's club that watch my kids while I work out. I have become friends with the ladies that take care of my kids and they have all lamented over the fact that we will be moving soon.

Friday Blake had a mock oral boards with his attending physicians. He said it went well and was glad to have it over with. Oral boards come after his written exam that he takes on July 10th of this year. After so many months into practicing, I want to say 6 months, you start collecting all the cases you have done and have to present them to a national board for review. This collection period lasts for about 6 months (I think?). The committee of board members pick 10 cases of your cases and then you have to study them and be able to answer questions pertaining to them. They may ask why you chose a certain approach, or why they used this method instead of another, etc. If the committee is satisfied with your answers you become what is called "Board Certified". It's very important to become board certified!

Blake and I also had our annual Friday night date. We played it simple and went to a burger joint to eat and went to some stores. It was low key and nice to be together. Saturday Blake and I were in charge of our Ward Party. We had a breakfast and softball game at the park. The ward provided eggs, tortillas, cheese, salsa, brisket, and drinks and ward members brought sides. Thankfully another member of the quorum went shopping to get the food so I didn't have to. We just had to cook eggs in the morning before we left our house. Blake did most of the hard work of setting everything up at the location. The kids had a blast playing with friends and on the playground. I even played a little bit of softball with the boys. It had been a while since I had swung a baseball bat. I had forgotten how much fun it is. Kayden LOVED watching. He's such a little boy and I LOVE it!! He loves balls, trucks, cars, planes, anything boy and he doesn't get those interests from any of the 4 girls that love on him all day. Below is a little video of him. Instead of saying car, he makes the sound of "brrrr" vibrating his lips....SO CUTE, I'll be sad when he grows out of it.

And for the finale to finish off the week....Blake and I spoke in church. I was grateful for the opportunity because it gave me a chance to leave my testimony with a ward that has been so good to me and my family while we have been here. It was like a parting testimony. Both our talks went well. We were asked to speak on experiences we have had here in Lubbock and how they relate to the scriptures. The things I spoke on were very personal and close to my heart and I struggled to keep my composure during my entire talk. After the meeting I had to go outside and hangout by the temple (our temple and stake center share the same lot) to cry and get my composure back. I think many were touched and I was thankful I was able to share something so meaningful to me. Blake bore his testimony on the Book of Mormon, but didn't go into much about our time here in Lubbock because I covered that ground pretty thoroughly. I usually don't write out my talks, but this one I did because it helped me collect my thoughts. I attached it for your reading pleasure below.

The Lord is my Shepherd
I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given to speak to you today. I’ve actually been going over this talk in my head for a couple of months even though I was just asked to speak last Sunday because as many of you know, we are moving in July and I’ve been thinking about what I would want to say to you all before we leave. As I have been contemplating about this more deeply this week, my heart has been full of gratitude and love as I have reminisced on how the Lord has guided us and taken care of us these past five years. I’ve been praying to know what Heavenly Father would have me share with you all and I have felt strongly that He wants me to share some experiences we have had here in Lubbock that have helped me realize how much the Lord loves each of us and that He is with us continually to help us with whatever it is we need at the time. This scripture found I found in Isaiah 58:11 sums it up perfectly: “And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat they bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.”

Funny how this scripture mentions drought, because I believe Lubbock has been in a drought the entire five years we have lived here. Ironic it may be, but I have truly felt the Lord’s love, guidance and comfort during the different seasons of drought we have experienced during the time we have been here.
For those that don’t know, my husband Blake has been doing a residency in orthopedic surgery and is just about to finish, marking 9 years from the time he started medical school. The rigors of this pursuit have not been easy and all of us have felt strained at one time or another constituting what can be described according to that scripture as a drought different periods of his medical training. Despite the challenges, as the Lord promised in that scripture: He has satisfied our souls in these periods of hardship or drought, and like a watered garden, we have felt nourished and have felt His loving care and comfort. Our burdens when heavy, were made to feel light, our marriage when tested was strengthened, when all the world’s logic said having children during this time was unwise, we were blessed with 4 and they have been nothing but a blessing to us. The list could go on and on. Like Nephi, I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he should prepare a way for them to accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

One experience I feel inspired to share happened not quite a year after we moved here to Lubbock and about 2 months after we were blessed with our 3rd daughter Lanaea. It was the most severe drought we had yet experienced as a family and it was during a time that the Lord took especial care of us. My husband Blake became very ill from a chronic disease he was diagnosed with many years back. His condition was such that he was hospitalized for a week, lost a significant amount of weight among other things, and had to have 3 different surgeries at a hospital in Abilene over the course of not quite a year. As you would expect, his illness then subsequent surgeries was not conducive to his medical training.  My heart ached with worry, but I took hope in reading Blake’s patriarchal blessing and did my best to live with faith that the Lord would take care of us.
In a talk given in the October 2008 General Conference, Elder Holland said when talking about Adam and Eve soon after they left the Garden of Eden,
“God knew the challenges they would face, and He certainly knew how lonely and troubled they would sometimes feel. So He watched over His mortal family constantly, heard their prayers always and sent prophets (and later apostles) to teach, counsel, and guide them. But in times of special need, He sent angels, divine messengers, to bless His children, reassure them that heaven was always very close and that His help was always very near.”
During this difficult time in our lives, we received all these things. We did not have any visitations of heavenly messengers, but Heavenly Father sent many of you to “reassure [us] that heaven [was] very close that this His Help was always very near.”

Elder Holland continued:
“When we speak of those who are instruments in the hand of God, we are reminded that not all angels are from the other side of the veil. Some of them we walk with and talk with—here, now, every day. Some of them reside in our own neighborhoods, Some of them gave birth to us…Indeed heaven never seems closer than when we see the love of God manifested in the kindness and devotion of people so good and so pure that angelic is the only word that comes to mind.”

One of these angels sent to us during this time was our dear bishop who we learned happened to have the same disease as Blake and was therefore able to offer perfect empathy and give me a special kind of hope that I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. Another was our next door neighbor who we learned after we bought our house was LDS. Some of you may remember the Bentley’s. Because of Blake’s condition, he was unable to do any yard work so I had been mowing the grass myself. KC Bentley would often beat me to it, arising early on a Saturday so he could get it done before I did. Having them right next door brought me comfort.

Blake’s parents were our angels for a season when they both flew out for each surgery, Blake’s Mom staying with Kelsey and Mylee in Lubbock. Even taking Kelsey to her first day of Kindergarten that happened to overlap with one of Blake’s surgeries. Blake’s dad came with Blake, Lanaea (who was still a young nursing baby at the time), and I to Abilene. Blake’s dad paid for my own hotel room and took care of my every need and was there as a support during Blake’s surgery. Another angel was my sweet Lanaea. When she was born we were unsure about a middle name, but felt inspired to name her Lanaea Joy after getting to know her a little bit at the hospital. She has lived up to her name because she has been nothing but Joy to us. She was a Joy to me during a time when having a young baby to care for was not convenient. The hospital staff were all amazed at what a good baby Lanaea was during each of Blake’s hospital stays that lasted about a week each time.

Over the course of almost a year, Blake struggled with his health. I was extremely fragile emotionally and spent physically, but we both did our best to get back to “normal” life as we knew it even though we were far from normal especially Blake.  His powerful faith and heavenly help enabled him to continue to go to work and he did his best despite his physical limitations. Heavenly Father blessed Blake’s bosses and most of his colleagues with a sympathetic heart, taking extra call among other things to assist Blake in his recovery.

Part of getting back to normal for me included being active in my calling as Stake Young Woman secretary. One night, the President, Marti Wallace said she felt inspired for me to go to a meeting for her, so I went. I honestly don’t remember what was talked about at the meeting, but I remember feeling like President Shumway was going to ask me to pray to close the meeting, which he did. I don’t remember what I said, but Sister Merrill said that she felt a strong prompting as I prayed that she needed to talk to me to see how I was doing.  We talked for a while and my emotions overcame me. I shared with her my burdens and she took some of them with her as we parted that day. Our newly called Relief Society President Sister Mitchell showed up at my door the next day. After a long talk and another dump load of burdens, she left promising me visiting teachers who she knew would come to visit me, she arranged to have meals brought in to me a couple days a week, and said she would coordinate with the Elder’s quorum to have them come mow our lawn when it needed it. I felt embarrassed for accepting such service, but it humbled me and I needed it and Heavenly Father provided a way for me to get help because He knew I wouldn’t ask for it.

I was grateful and humbled for that service during that time and it was done by many of you, working as instruments in the Lord’s hands, my angels. It helped me re-charge my batteries and helped me focus on my family and in nourishing my testimony and faith in the Savior. I learned from President Uchdorf’s talk he gave in October of 2010, that during times of stress we need to slow down on focus on the basics. He said,
“One of the things we learn from studying the growth of trees is that during seasons when conditions are ideal, trees grow at a normal rate. However, during seasons when growing conditions are not ideal, tress slow down their growth and devote their energy to the basic elements necessary for survival.”
I expressed concern to Sister Mitchell that I was receiving too much. She reassured me that I would get my chance to give back. When I received my call to serve in compassionate service almost two years ago, I felt so thankful and knew that call had come from the Lord. It was Him giving me a chance to give back during all those times that I was the receiver.
Sister Cammack, whom I served with in Young Women’s is another woman I consider an angel that was sent to me in a time that I was in special need.  In the early days of Blake’s illness and before Sister Cammack knew much about what was going on, she asked if she could start taking my girls for the day once a week. She said she felt like she should have asked me sooner and apologized for not doing so. At first I was hesitant, because it was such a generous offer and I didn’t want to burden her. But in the back of my mind, I wanted to accept because I needed it. After some humbling, I consented and she took Kelsey and Mylee once a day every week for 6 hours at a time. She did this consistently for TWO YEARS, taking just Mylee once Kelsey started Kindergarten the 2nd year. It was such a blessing to me and ending up being a big blessing to her and my children as well. Her grandchildren lived far away and she was not able to see them very often. My girls loved having a grandmother figure to look up to close by. Sister Cammack had the tradition of taking them to Chick-fila or McDonald’s for lunch EVERY visit and would always send them home with snacks of cheese puffs and Hershey kisses. She has since moved from Lubbock, but her friendship and service is something I will hold dear forever.

Sister Wallace, who served as President when I served in the young women’s, is another dear sister that has brought me much comfort and served me in times of need. Sister Wallace had served as my Beehive advisor when I was a girl in Utah. I had learned about her living here after Blake matched here for residency. It was another tender mercy of the Lord. Knowing that she lived here made me feel immediately at home. When I came to look for a house without Blake, she let me stay at her house, found me a great realtor, and escorted me house shopping. I consider her my mom away from home. Our schedules don’t allow us to see or talk to each other much, but she is someone I can call if I need anything and she’ll do it. On one day, I was out on an assignment to pick up t-shirts I had ordered for youth conference downtown and I got lost. Due to a limited budget, I had decided to not have the added expense of having a cell phone, so I was lost without a phone to call for help. I remember going into a dairy queen to use a pay phone, but couldn’t get a hold of anyone. After some fervent prayers I eventually found the t-shirt shop and I made it back just in time for the stake youth committee to organize the shirts for youth conference. After this experience, Sister Wallace showed up one day at my house with a new cell phone she had purchased just for me that she put under her plan and insisted that I take it and use it at no charge. I once again felt humbled and blessed.

In D&C 84:88 it reads: And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.

I have seen this manifested in my life so many times. The Lord loves us so much, we are his children and he wants us to come back to him.
Just recently I’ve had a couple of experiences that have once again reminded me of how much the Lord is aware of us and how much He truly watches over us. I took my oldest daughter to a gymnastics meet here in town because some teams from Albuquerque were coming to compete and I wanted to see the talent in the different gyms to get an idea on what gym we should transfer Kelsey to when we move to Albuquerque in a couple of months. The next day was Sunday and Blake and I noticed a new family sitting on the front row. Blake went to introduce himself and welcomed them. They happened to be at the meet the day before competing and were just visiting. While talking we found out they lived in an area of Albuquerque that we have been looking for a house to rent. He mentioned that he knew a family in their ward that was just finishing up a fellowship and may want to rent their house out. He gave us their number and he gave the family our number. Within days that family called us. They were in fact wanting to rent their house. And their house happened to have the EXACT square footage as ours, the same number of bedrooms, and the rent they were asking was the EXACT amount we are currently paying for our mortgage. Again another tender mercy from the Lord.

Another occasion happened about a month ago when we were getting ready to put our house up for sale by owner. Every year Texas Tech gives the new incoming residents a packet of information to fill out. In that packet they give residents that are leaving an opportunity to include a house flyer for those that are trying to sell. I put together a flyer and put together a nice website with pictures of our house. Blake also emailed the residents that matched into his program our flyer in case they were interested. Blake received an email back within hours from one of the new in-coming residents in his program expressing a desire to come look at our house. After going through our house, they came back with an offer within a couple of days and we were able to agree on a price that we were both happy with. Our buyer’s mother also happens to be a realtor in Texas so she took care of all the paper work that none of us had experience with. All tender mercies of the Lord and once again confirmation that the Lord is aware of us and that He takes good care of us.
In D&C 90:24 it says, “Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted one with another.”

I testify that this is true. BEAR TESTIMONY….CLOSE

Tidbits from this Week

It was a nice and somewhat normal week. I've been working hard on trying to find joy in the minutia and not be so uptight about having a clean house and folded laundry---because let's be honest, it's never ending!!! I've been praying to find ways to enjoy my kids, especially now while they are still young. I've found that if I'm not careful I get swallowed up in household responsibilities/chores and I miss precious opportunities to love on my kids and enjoy them. On Friday, Mylee had a friend over and instead of utilizing the time where all my kids would be preoccupied playing to get caught up on some chores, I invited their mother to join us and we visited for over an hour in the backyard while our kids played. Yes, I still had a pile of dishes to do, but I was able to connect to another human being and help develop a friendship. My kids also benefited from me being out there during their play. I also made the effort to go to our ward's playgroup this week at the park...again I had stuff to do around the house, but I went and I didn't regret it. I've been missing out too much on this stuff. It's amazing how much connecting with other person beings can lighten up your spirits!

On Saturday I babysat my friend's little girl who is Kayden's age. It was so cute to watch them play together. They sat in this bench swing forever...so adorable.
I usually let my kids watch "Wild Kratts" (super cute PBS kids program that teaches about different animals) while I get dinner ready. As I was making dinner earlier in the week, I happened to capture this precious moment between Kayden and Mylee. Mylee is my little nurturer. She LOVES babies and you better believe she was eating up all of these Kayden cuddles.
I thought I might re-introduce you all to our dog Bella. It's been almost exactly a year since we got her. The kids love her, Blake loves her, I'm trying to learn to LIKE her. At one point this week I was determined to sell her, but then I watched Kayden interact with her and I changed my mind. She is a good dog, just hyper and loves to play. The wind blew down part of our fence this week and I thought she had run away, but she was waiting just outside our gate, not knowing what happened....like I said she is a good dog. Blake constantly has to remind me of this.
Blake and I went to the newly built Alamo Drafthouse Cinema for our weekly date this Friday...yes we have a date 3 Fridays out of the month, the 4th Friday we babysit kids that are part of our babysitting co-op group---best thing ever for us by the way!!! We saw the new Captain America and ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a root beer. The Alamo is essentially dinner and a movie all in one. We had our own waitress and table right in the theater during our movie, pretty unique and fun. The food was SO good and the fries were to die for!! The movie was good too, but it was especially nice to have some one-on-one time with my man..love him! After every date I can't wait until the next week to go on another one. It re-charges my batteries and it's fun to get fancied up a little bit.
