Last Day of School 2014!

Last day of 3rd Grade
The girls had their last day of school this week. We were all happy to see it end. We all are looking forward to a less busy schedule and having more time to do fun projects together. Unfortunately with all the rain, their field day that was rescheduled this week was canceled again due to all the mud on and around the school property. The girls were sad, but what do you do? The girls have had such a good experience at Centennial Elementary. I'm hopeful that their next school will be just as great for them next year in Albuquerque.

Last day of Kindergarten

Mylee at the entrance of her kindergarten classroom. Last time she'll ever step foot there again.

The gifts we made for their teachers. A box with a bunch of different cookies.

Kelsey had a "Bahama Bucks" class party. She is sitting next to one of her best friends Elizabeth Buckberry.

RAIN!!!

Yes people, the fact that we are getting rain, deserves a post of its very own!!! I can't even remember the last time we had rain!! It started raining Thursday evening and has continued to rain BUCKETS on and off ever since. Kelsey was in tears on Friday because they were supposed to have their field day (they call it buddy fun day), but it was rescheduled for Tuesday because of the rain. Literally there were rivers in our streets when I took them to school that day! Blake asked if school was canceled. Ha, ha, if it school were canceled for rain, Lubbock would be a place to cancel for it because rain has been so rare!! Kelsey had cinema day instead at school. For months she has been earning fake money to buy things for "Cinema day". Apparently she earned $50 dollars. I didn't realize how much that was until she came home on Friday with an entire gallon-sized bag full of suckers and pixie sticks!!! Dum dum and pixie stick wrappers have been emerging all over my house ever since!!!

Post by KCBD NewsChannel 11. Check out this link to see the rain we have been getting.

Sweet Mylee woke up Friday morning asking, "Mom, what is that noise outside!?" My reply, "That dear Mylee is RAIN!!"  Ha, ha, it's been so long we have had rain she didn't recognize the sound right off. Even our dog Bella was spazzing out. I went in the backyard to get the picture I took above and she zoomed in the house. For the life of me I couldn't get her back outside, so she hung out in her kennel in the garage for a couple of hours until I was able to coax her to the backyard again.

The two pictures below are gems I caught this week doing our normal daily routine. Also noteworthy to mention this week. I went to the mall on Saturday with ALL four of my kids....YES, I'm NUTS!! And YES, it was TERRIBLE!!! Blake has a job interview...for a REAL job, on Thursday and I'm invited to come with him. We fly out Thursday with Kayden and come back Sunday night. We are going to Kennewick, Washington. Our friends are watching our 3 girls here in Lubbock while we are gone. The group is taking Blake and I out to dinner on Friday and Saturday night and I didn't have anything business casual to wear. Luckily I found some things that I'm excited about, BUT man, shopping is so stressful!!! I feel like I don't know how to dress myself anymore with all the new styles now a days. I do like what I got though and I'm excited...NO MORE shopping for a while though!!

A gem I caught of these two daytime buddies playing on our horse Buster that Daddy made.

A carousal horse just outside the kid's club area at the gym. Kayden has to touch it every time we pass by it.

End of School Year Award Ceremonies 2014

Kelsey and Mylee had their end of school year award ceremonies this week. Kelsey got an award for being on the honor roll. She finished 3rd grade with a perfect 4.0. She's a happy, smart, spunky, talented little thing! She also got an award for numeracy/number sense (I'm going to ask her teacher what all that entails, I was surprised at this one. Every other year it's always been reading). We also got her results from her STARR test, the Texas Standardized tests that all students from the entire state take each year. She only missed 3 questions on the ENTIRE exam...SO proud of her! She has been excited to take the STARR test all year...yes I said she's been excited to take a TEST of all things!! She was so happy with her results.

Mylee did great this year in Kindergarten. She loves to learn and LOVES school. She's pictured above with her sweet teacher Mrs. Picon. Mylee got an achievement award for Math...SO proud!!! This is an area that I have always struggled in. Mylee is our deep thinker and perfectionist. She gets frustrated when she can't do something perfectly....hummm, like Mother like daughter! She is such a hard worker and so full of smiles. Kids adore her and she adores them just as much back. So thankful for my Mylee!

Kadyen's First Big Boo Boo

I have a picture of me at about this same age doing the same thing in the dryer. Wish I had a copy of it to place it here. Kayden is such a fun, happy little boy. He LOVES to play peek-a-boo. It can pull him out of a bad mood or tantrum most of the time.
At bedtime Lanaea slammed Kayden's finger in her bedroom door by accident. She was going to bed and was trying to close her door before Kayden followed her in there. I didn't see it happen, so I'm not sure exactly where his finger was when it got slammed, but it was about as bad as you can get for slammed fingers, minus getting your finger cut off. We are unsure if it was fractured. Thank goodness Blake was home when it happened! I don't handle these things too well. It's not really the blood, but the fact that my child has been harmed and the fear about how they are going to recover from their injury. I'm hopeful that his nail will grow back, but Blake said it's possible that it may not because of where his finger was slammed in the door. Time will only tell. Blake left for Denver the next morning for a Miller Review Course to cover material that may be on the board exam he takes in July. He's been gone all week. Tuesday and Wednesday were very stressful because Kayden's wound was so fresh and he kept taking off his bandages. Luckily I managed all week changing countless dressings. Just today (Sunday) I know I have changed it at least 4 or 5 times. He came out of his room this morning without his dressing on and his finger nail was gone. I'm thankful we were able to keep it on for as long as we did to help his nail heal. It's looking a lot better.
Kayden getting sweet snuggles from Dr. Dad. He cried and cried after he got hurt.

Got his ball for comfort.

May 2014 Week 3 Tidbits

To begin with, how many things can you point out that are wrong with this picture above? Yes, there are no sheets--good. And yes, Kayden is wearing girly pajamas, and why you may be asking are Lanaea and Kayden sleeping in the same bed? Well, let me explain, the sheets? Mondays happen to be my laundry day and this Monday I bit off more then I could chew and the sheets didn't make their way back to beds before evening. Kayden's pajamas? Well, you know he has three sisters and I tend to have laundry issues...apparently. Don't worry he does own boyish pajamas too. And why are they sleeping in the same bed? Lanaea got irritated by her sisters and decided to sleep in Kayden's bed without my knowledge. When I came in to put Kayden down for the night I found her in his bed so I set up his pack and play port-a-crib for him to sleep in for the night. Later that night when I came back to check on them, that pic above is what I found. My little boy is a monkey and no crib of any kind can contain him anymore so I have to lock his door so he doesn't come out of his room to get him to go to sleep. The problem is, is that he can't climb back into the port-a-crib without help, so he bunked up with his sister...girly pajamas, no sheets and all. And don't worry, Lanaea was put back in her own bed WITH sheets and Kayden got put back in his port-a-crib until I got his crib sheets back on the next day.

Other then this motherly blunder, the rest of the week went well, just busy. Blake had call on Monday and Wednesday. Monday night was a doosy with phone calls throughout most of the night keeping both of us awake for what felt like all night. I injured my arm about 3 1/2 week ago donating plasma, I know...donating plasma? Blake had been doing it too because we needed some extra cash. I was in for my second donation and they infiltrated my vein (blood essentially got into my tissues) and I got the biggest and ugliest bruise you have EVER seen on my right arm. I haven't talked about it before now because it's been quite upsetting to me, but it doesn't hurt anymore and the bruise has mostly resolved. It still has at least a week or two to go before my body absorbs the rest of the blood. Anyways, Wednesday was my first day back to lifting weights with my arms and getting back into my normal workout routine at the gym. It felt really good and I did better then I thought I would. Friday night and Saturday I paid for it though...my legs were so sore!! It was good though, it has been a while that I have been so sore and apparently whatever I did, my body needed it to get stronger. It's been just over a year since I got my gym membership and it's been such a blessing to me. I never realized before how much I love to exercise! It's such a release. I have the most amazing gym to go to too. The classes are great, but what makes it SO awesome is the free kid's club that watch my kids while I work out. I have become friends with the ladies that take care of my kids and they have all lamented over the fact that we will be moving soon.

Friday Blake had a mock oral boards with his attending physicians. He said it went well and was glad to have it over with. Oral boards come after his written exam that he takes on July 10th of this year. After so many months into practicing, I want to say 6 months, you start collecting all the cases you have done and have to present them to a national board for review. This collection period lasts for about 6 months (I think?). The committee of board members pick 10 cases of your cases and then you have to study them and be able to answer questions pertaining to them. They may ask why you chose a certain approach, or why they used this method instead of another, etc. If the committee is satisfied with your answers you become what is called "Board Certified". It's very important to become board certified!

Blake and I also had our annual Friday night date. We played it simple and went to a burger joint to eat and went to some stores. It was low key and nice to be together. Saturday Blake and I were in charge of our Ward Party. We had a breakfast and softball game at the park. The ward provided eggs, tortillas, cheese, salsa, brisket, and drinks and ward members brought sides. Thankfully another member of the quorum went shopping to get the food so I didn't have to. We just had to cook eggs in the morning before we left our house. Blake did most of the hard work of setting everything up at the location. The kids had a blast playing with friends and on the playground. I even played a little bit of softball with the boys. It had been a while since I had swung a baseball bat. I had forgotten how much fun it is. Kayden LOVED watching. He's such a little boy and I LOVE it!! He loves balls, trucks, cars, planes, anything boy and he doesn't get those interests from any of the 4 girls that love on him all day. Below is a little video of him. Instead of saying car, he makes the sound of "brrrr" vibrating his lips....SO CUTE, I'll be sad when he grows out of it.

And for the finale to finish off the week....Blake and I spoke in church. I was grateful for the opportunity because it gave me a chance to leave my testimony with a ward that has been so good to me and my family while we have been here. It was like a parting testimony. Both our talks went well. We were asked to speak on experiences we have had here in Lubbock and how they relate to the scriptures. The things I spoke on were very personal and close to my heart and I struggled to keep my composure during my entire talk. After the meeting I had to go outside and hangout by the temple (our temple and stake center share the same lot) to cry and get my composure back. I think many were touched and I was thankful I was able to share something so meaningful to me. Blake bore his testimony on the Book of Mormon, but didn't go into much about our time here in Lubbock because I covered that ground pretty thoroughly. I usually don't write out my talks, but this one I did because it helped me collect my thoughts. I attached it for your reading pleasure below.

The Lord is my Shepherd
I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given to speak to you today. I’ve actually been going over this talk in my head for a couple of months even though I was just asked to speak last Sunday because as many of you know, we are moving in July and I’ve been thinking about what I would want to say to you all before we leave. As I have been contemplating about this more deeply this week, my heart has been full of gratitude and love as I have reminisced on how the Lord has guided us and taken care of us these past five years. I’ve been praying to know what Heavenly Father would have me share with you all and I have felt strongly that He wants me to share some experiences we have had here in Lubbock that have helped me realize how much the Lord loves each of us and that He is with us continually to help us with whatever it is we need at the time. This scripture found I found in Isaiah 58:11 sums it up perfectly: “And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat they bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.”

Funny how this scripture mentions drought, because I believe Lubbock has been in a drought the entire five years we have lived here. Ironic it may be, but I have truly felt the Lord’s love, guidance and comfort during the different seasons of drought we have experienced during the time we have been here.
For those that don’t know, my husband Blake has been doing a residency in orthopedic surgery and is just about to finish, marking 9 years from the time he started medical school. The rigors of this pursuit have not been easy and all of us have felt strained at one time or another constituting what can be described according to that scripture as a drought different periods of his medical training. Despite the challenges, as the Lord promised in that scripture: He has satisfied our souls in these periods of hardship or drought, and like a watered garden, we have felt nourished and have felt His loving care and comfort. Our burdens when heavy, were made to feel light, our marriage when tested was strengthened, when all the world’s logic said having children during this time was unwise, we were blessed with 4 and they have been nothing but a blessing to us. The list could go on and on. Like Nephi, I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he should prepare a way for them to accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

One experience I feel inspired to share happened not quite a year after we moved here to Lubbock and about 2 months after we were blessed with our 3rd daughter Lanaea. It was the most severe drought we had yet experienced as a family and it was during a time that the Lord took especial care of us. My husband Blake became very ill from a chronic disease he was diagnosed with many years back. His condition was such that he was hospitalized for a week, lost a significant amount of weight among other things, and had to have 3 different surgeries at a hospital in Abilene over the course of not quite a year. As you would expect, his illness then subsequent surgeries was not conducive to his medical training.  My heart ached with worry, but I took hope in reading Blake’s patriarchal blessing and did my best to live with faith that the Lord would take care of us.
In a talk given in the October 2008 General Conference, Elder Holland said when talking about Adam and Eve soon after they left the Garden of Eden,
“God knew the challenges they would face, and He certainly knew how lonely and troubled they would sometimes feel. So He watched over His mortal family constantly, heard their prayers always and sent prophets (and later apostles) to teach, counsel, and guide them. But in times of special need, He sent angels, divine messengers, to bless His children, reassure them that heaven was always very close and that His help was always very near.”
During this difficult time in our lives, we received all these things. We did not have any visitations of heavenly messengers, but Heavenly Father sent many of you to “reassure [us] that heaven [was] very close that this His Help was always very near.”

Elder Holland continued:
“When we speak of those who are instruments in the hand of God, we are reminded that not all angels are from the other side of the veil. Some of them we walk with and talk with—here, now, every day. Some of them reside in our own neighborhoods, Some of them gave birth to us…Indeed heaven never seems closer than when we see the love of God manifested in the kindness and devotion of people so good and so pure that angelic is the only word that comes to mind.”

One of these angels sent to us during this time was our dear bishop who we learned happened to have the same disease as Blake and was therefore able to offer perfect empathy and give me a special kind of hope that I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. Another was our next door neighbor who we learned after we bought our house was LDS. Some of you may remember the Bentley’s. Because of Blake’s condition, he was unable to do any yard work so I had been mowing the grass myself. KC Bentley would often beat me to it, arising early on a Saturday so he could get it done before I did. Having them right next door brought me comfort.

Blake’s parents were our angels for a season when they both flew out for each surgery, Blake’s Mom staying with Kelsey and Mylee in Lubbock. Even taking Kelsey to her first day of Kindergarten that happened to overlap with one of Blake’s surgeries. Blake’s dad came with Blake, Lanaea (who was still a young nursing baby at the time), and I to Abilene. Blake’s dad paid for my own hotel room and took care of my every need and was there as a support during Blake’s surgery. Another angel was my sweet Lanaea. When she was born we were unsure about a middle name, but felt inspired to name her Lanaea Joy after getting to know her a little bit at the hospital. She has lived up to her name because she has been nothing but Joy to us. She was a Joy to me during a time when having a young baby to care for was not convenient. The hospital staff were all amazed at what a good baby Lanaea was during each of Blake’s hospital stays that lasted about a week each time.

Over the course of almost a year, Blake struggled with his health. I was extremely fragile emotionally and spent physically, but we both did our best to get back to “normal” life as we knew it even though we were far from normal especially Blake.  His powerful faith and heavenly help enabled him to continue to go to work and he did his best despite his physical limitations. Heavenly Father blessed Blake’s bosses and most of his colleagues with a sympathetic heart, taking extra call among other things to assist Blake in his recovery.

Part of getting back to normal for me included being active in my calling as Stake Young Woman secretary. One night, the President, Marti Wallace said she felt inspired for me to go to a meeting for her, so I went. I honestly don’t remember what was talked about at the meeting, but I remember feeling like President Shumway was going to ask me to pray to close the meeting, which he did. I don’t remember what I said, but Sister Merrill said that she felt a strong prompting as I prayed that she needed to talk to me to see how I was doing.  We talked for a while and my emotions overcame me. I shared with her my burdens and she took some of them with her as we parted that day. Our newly called Relief Society President Sister Mitchell showed up at my door the next day. After a long talk and another dump load of burdens, she left promising me visiting teachers who she knew would come to visit me, she arranged to have meals brought in to me a couple days a week, and said she would coordinate with the Elder’s quorum to have them come mow our lawn when it needed it. I felt embarrassed for accepting such service, but it humbled me and I needed it and Heavenly Father provided a way for me to get help because He knew I wouldn’t ask for it.

I was grateful and humbled for that service during that time and it was done by many of you, working as instruments in the Lord’s hands, my angels. It helped me re-charge my batteries and helped me focus on my family and in nourishing my testimony and faith in the Savior. I learned from President Uchdorf’s talk he gave in October of 2010, that during times of stress we need to slow down on focus on the basics. He said,
“One of the things we learn from studying the growth of trees is that during seasons when conditions are ideal, trees grow at a normal rate. However, during seasons when growing conditions are not ideal, tress slow down their growth and devote their energy to the basic elements necessary for survival.”
I expressed concern to Sister Mitchell that I was receiving too much. She reassured me that I would get my chance to give back. When I received my call to serve in compassionate service almost two years ago, I felt so thankful and knew that call had come from the Lord. It was Him giving me a chance to give back during all those times that I was the receiver.
Sister Cammack, whom I served with in Young Women’s is another woman I consider an angel that was sent to me in a time that I was in special need.  In the early days of Blake’s illness and before Sister Cammack knew much about what was going on, she asked if she could start taking my girls for the day once a week. She said she felt like she should have asked me sooner and apologized for not doing so. At first I was hesitant, because it was such a generous offer and I didn’t want to burden her. But in the back of my mind, I wanted to accept because I needed it. After some humbling, I consented and she took Kelsey and Mylee once a day every week for 6 hours at a time. She did this consistently for TWO YEARS, taking just Mylee once Kelsey started Kindergarten the 2nd year. It was such a blessing to me and ending up being a big blessing to her and my children as well. Her grandchildren lived far away and she was not able to see them very often. My girls loved having a grandmother figure to look up to close by. Sister Cammack had the tradition of taking them to Chick-fila or McDonald’s for lunch EVERY visit and would always send them home with snacks of cheese puffs and Hershey kisses. She has since moved from Lubbock, but her friendship and service is something I will hold dear forever.

Sister Wallace, who served as President when I served in the young women’s, is another dear sister that has brought me much comfort and served me in times of need. Sister Wallace had served as my Beehive advisor when I was a girl in Utah. I had learned about her living here after Blake matched here for residency. It was another tender mercy of the Lord. Knowing that she lived here made me feel immediately at home. When I came to look for a house without Blake, she let me stay at her house, found me a great realtor, and escorted me house shopping. I consider her my mom away from home. Our schedules don’t allow us to see or talk to each other much, but she is someone I can call if I need anything and she’ll do it. On one day, I was out on an assignment to pick up t-shirts I had ordered for youth conference downtown and I got lost. Due to a limited budget, I had decided to not have the added expense of having a cell phone, so I was lost without a phone to call for help. I remember going into a dairy queen to use a pay phone, but couldn’t get a hold of anyone. After some fervent prayers I eventually found the t-shirt shop and I made it back just in time for the stake youth committee to organize the shirts for youth conference. After this experience, Sister Wallace showed up one day at my house with a new cell phone she had purchased just for me that she put under her plan and insisted that I take it and use it at no charge. I once again felt humbled and blessed.

In D&C 84:88 it reads: And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.

I have seen this manifested in my life so many times. The Lord loves us so much, we are his children and he wants us to come back to him.
Just recently I’ve had a couple of experiences that have once again reminded me of how much the Lord is aware of us and how much He truly watches over us. I took my oldest daughter to a gymnastics meet here in town because some teams from Albuquerque were coming to compete and I wanted to see the talent in the different gyms to get an idea on what gym we should transfer Kelsey to when we move to Albuquerque in a couple of months. The next day was Sunday and Blake and I noticed a new family sitting on the front row. Blake went to introduce himself and welcomed them. They happened to be at the meet the day before competing and were just visiting. While talking we found out they lived in an area of Albuquerque that we have been looking for a house to rent. He mentioned that he knew a family in their ward that was just finishing up a fellowship and may want to rent their house out. He gave us their number and he gave the family our number. Within days that family called us. They were in fact wanting to rent their house. And their house happened to have the EXACT square footage as ours, the same number of bedrooms, and the rent they were asking was the EXACT amount we are currently paying for our mortgage. Again another tender mercy from the Lord.

Another occasion happened about a month ago when we were getting ready to put our house up for sale by owner. Every year Texas Tech gives the new incoming residents a packet of information to fill out. In that packet they give residents that are leaving an opportunity to include a house flyer for those that are trying to sell. I put together a flyer and put together a nice website with pictures of our house. Blake also emailed the residents that matched into his program our flyer in case they were interested. Blake received an email back within hours from one of the new in-coming residents in his program expressing a desire to come look at our house. After going through our house, they came back with an offer within a couple of days and we were able to agree on a price that we were both happy with. Our buyer’s mother also happens to be a realtor in Texas so she took care of all the paper work that none of us had experience with. All tender mercies of the Lord and once again confirmation that the Lord is aware of us and that He takes good care of us.
In D&C 90:24 it says, “Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted one with another.”

I testify that this is true. BEAR TESTIMONY….CLOSE

Tidbits from this Week

It was a nice and somewhat normal week. I've been working hard on trying to find joy in the minutia and not be so uptight about having a clean house and folded laundry---because let's be honest, it's never ending!!! I've been praying to find ways to enjoy my kids, especially now while they are still young. I've found that if I'm not careful I get swallowed up in household responsibilities/chores and I miss precious opportunities to love on my kids and enjoy them. On Friday, Mylee had a friend over and instead of utilizing the time where all my kids would be preoccupied playing to get caught up on some chores, I invited their mother to join us and we visited for over an hour in the backyard while our kids played. Yes, I still had a pile of dishes to do, but I was able to connect to another human being and help develop a friendship. My kids also benefited from me being out there during their play. I also made the effort to go to our ward's playgroup this week at the park...again I had stuff to do around the house, but I went and I didn't regret it. I've been missing out too much on this stuff. It's amazing how much connecting with other person beings can lighten up your spirits!

On Saturday I babysat my friend's little girl who is Kayden's age. It was so cute to watch them play together. They sat in this bench swing forever...so adorable.
I usually let my kids watch "Wild Kratts" (super cute PBS kids program that teaches about different animals) while I get dinner ready. As I was making dinner earlier in the week, I happened to capture this precious moment between Kayden and Mylee. Mylee is my little nurturer. She LOVES babies and you better believe she was eating up all of these Kayden cuddles.
I thought I might re-introduce you all to our dog Bella. It's been almost exactly a year since we got her. The kids love her, Blake loves her, I'm trying to learn to LIKE her. At one point this week I was determined to sell her, but then I watched Kayden interact with her and I changed my mind. She is a good dog, just hyper and loves to play. The wind blew down part of our fence this week and I thought she had run away, but she was waiting just outside our gate, not knowing what happened....like I said she is a good dog. Blake constantly has to remind me of this.
Blake and I went to the newly built Alamo Drafthouse Cinema for our weekly date this Friday...yes we have a date 3 Fridays out of the month, the 4th Friday we babysit kids that are part of our babysitting co-op group---best thing ever for us by the way!!! We saw the new Captain America and ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a root beer. The Alamo is essentially dinner and a movie all in one. We had our own waitress and table right in the theater during our movie, pretty unique and fun. The food was SO good and the fries were to die for!! The movie was good too, but it was especially nice to have some one-on-one time with my man..love him! After every date I can't wait until the next week to go on another one. It re-charges my batteries and it's fun to get fancied up a little bit.

Mother's Day 2014

I love mother's day!! I'm at the point now where I get cute little homemade gifts from my kids. As a kid I looked making mother's day a special day for my mom. I remember feeling so excited to surprise her with breakfast and thought long and hard about a special gift I could give her. Kelsey finds the same satisfaction in serving me. She was so excited about today that Saturday night she was all giddy with enthusiasm and kept telling me, "Mom, I'm so excited for tomorrow!! You're going to LOVE it!" On Saturday night she left the following note for Blake:
She did not disappoint this morning. I made some roll dough the night before because she wanted to have cinnamon rolls for breakfast for me, but wasn't confident enough to do it by herself yet. Blake rolled out them out and we let them raise overnight in the fridge. Kelsey got up early and baked the cinnamon rolls as well as eggs with cheese on top and made some toast. She set the table and placed the present she made for me on my plate. It was so special....and her face when she saw me look at what she had created was priceless!! Mylee was involved too and was also excited to celebrate me. Lanaea came into my bathroom while I was still getting ready and gave me a big hug and told me happy mother's day in her sweet quite voice.
This is what Mylee made for me

There are fridge magnets that Kelsey made for me

This is a flower bouquet that Kelsey made for me
This is Kelsey's letter to me
This is the gift Blake got me. I hurt my finger back in November and I haven't been able to wear my wedding ring since, so he got this pretty band for me to wear.

The girls enjoyed drawing pictures and writing letters to their grandmother's today too. I compiled all their pictures, scanned them in and emailed them to my moms today. Each note and picture was so precious and from the heart.

I'm so grateful to be a mother! I wouldn't be satisfied doing anything else. Motherhood truly is a divine calling and I'm grateful for the trust Heavenly Father has shown in me by sending his precious children to me to raise. Happy Mother's Day to all you mother's and mother's-to-be out there!

Lubbock Lemonade Day!

Every spring Lubbock holds a lemonade day where kids can start their own businesses. I was leery about participating this year because the girls sold lemonade last week during our garage sale, Kelsey was insistent though and did all of the work in preparing for the sale herself. She made a poster, prepared the lemonade, cut up some lemons, hung signs, she even made a tip jar! Kelsey and Mylee did most of the selling, but Lanaea came out to help a little too. The girls made $17 and sold out of their lemonade (all I bought was 2 gallons worth).

Rock Solid Gymnastic Showcase

Kelsey had her gymnastic showcase on Saturday evening, showcasing the skills she has been working on all year. She was so excited. She got a special leotard in blue, purple and green with RSA on the back for her pre-team group. I was even given instructions on how to have her hair done for the performance. She felt so official and special and couldn't stop looking at herself in the mirror after I had gotten her all ready. Overall she did great. Her performance wasn't perfect to her dismay...yes we even had tears because of that, but we were proud of her.
Her first vault
Her second vault
Her bar routine
Her trampoline routine
Her beam routine

This is her floor routine, sweet thing forgot parts of it so she was in tears after the competition and all the way home. It was a good lesson to learn for her. Since then she has been practicing her floor routine multiple times at home.

Sorry about the last two videos, I have had problems with them uploading all day. You can't push play on these, but you can still see her routine.

Carlsbad Caverns

Blake and I had been talking about going to Carlsbad caverns for years, but something always got in the way of us going. We knew Blake wouldn't have to work Friday because his attending physician was out of town, so we decided on a whim to surprise the girls Friday morning and take them. I woke up at 5am to prepare our lunches, put water in all of our camelbaks, and other items we would need on our trip. The girls were excited when we told them that morning and made waking them up at 5:30am less of a battle. Kelsey helped pack activities for the car and we were off for our 3.5 hour drive.

Since living in Texas, we have become accustomed to long drives. A 3.5 hour drive is a piece of cake for us. I know most hate traveling for long periods of time, but I actually enjoy them. It's a time Blake and I can really talk to one another without the distractions of his job/responsibilities and the world at large. We talk about our life, our dreams, future plans, our kids. It's almost like therapy for me to get away from the demands I face at home to just sit and talk with my husband. For really long drives, we enjoy calling family members we haven't spoken to in a long time. We have been blessed with kids who do extremely well on long drives. Kelsey read the 2nd Harry Potter book most of the time and the other kids just enjoyed looking out the window, playing with each other, or sleeping.

We arrived at Carlsbad Caverns about 10:30am. It was impressive to think, that in this arid dessert and dare I say UGLY place, there lived an underground palace of sorts. The visitors center was huge!! I've seen many visitor centers on our various travels throughout the country and this one beat them all by far. The place was massive and equipped with all sort of amenities. I was fascinated at how they were able to conserve the natural beauties of the cave and make it possible for normal people like us to come and enjoy the wonders of it. At the natural entrance of the cave the had built am amphitheater of sorts for viewing bats that came out at night time to feed. We didn't stay for the "bat show", Mylee and Lanaea were happy about that.

Upon entering the cave, it was somewhat frightening and fascinating all at the same time. Mylee and Lanaea were a little unsure about entering. I didn't blame them. The opening was massive and it was dark. It was so dark in some places that we had to rely upon the pavement beneath our feet and the metal railings at our sides to know where to go. I had been to Timpanogos cave in Utah, so I knew a little about what to expect, but this cave was so much grander in every aspect. The cave decorations (as they call them), or stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, draperies, etc, we breathtaking to view. Reading about the history of the cave's formation was also fascinating and made me ponder about the creation of the earth, wondering if perhaps this cave's formation started during the earth's early years.

The girls were in awe. It was fun to see their excitement and see the wonder in their eyes. Kelsey had brought her little kids camera and we taking pictures left and right. Kayden was just happy to be walking along side his daddy. Eventually he landed on Blake's shoulders when his legs got tired...so cute!! We didn't walk the entire length of the paved trails inside because our kids were tired. We all thought it was neat to ride an elevator 750 feet back to the surface in the visitor's center. I can't imagine the effort it took to build that elevator, but we were all thankful for their efforts because it would have been a long and hard climb uphill to get out.

Moving Yard Sale

This week we held our very first yard sale since being married. After 10 years of marriage and 4 kids we had accumulated quite a bit of stuff. We said goodbye to the armoire we purchased in Vermont. I remember getting it at Kmart and feeling so excited to put it in our new home. It was so new and pretty back then, but the years had not been kind to it and we didn't think it would survive another move. We also said goodbye to a coffee table we were given a desk we purchased at a garage sale. We also sold baby clothes, toys, and random household items. Selling the baby clothes and the armoire was the hardest part for me. Two weeks prior I went through our many bins of baby clothes to sort through them. There was no point in having to haul so many pieces of clothing. I kept the clothing that was sentimental to me, but gave away the clothes that either my kids didn't wear, were outdated, or too worn. I reminisced the times my kids wore those clothes and how thankful we were to have them.

Kelsey wanted to participate in the sale by holding a lemonade stand. I had grand plans to make cinnamon rolls the night before to have them fresh and ready for the next morning....needless to say, that didn't happen. I was frustrated, but through the lulls in the day of having people come by to our sale I made two cookie sheet pans of cinnamon rolls. Kelsey was able to sell all of them (we ate some too). She prepared the lemonade herself by following the directions on the country time lemonade canister. She also cut up lemons for those customers that wanted them. Seeing her get so excited about selling lemonade warmed my heart. Mylee and Lanaea helped here and there too.

At the end of the day, we had sold all of our big ticket items, but had loads of clothes and toys leftover. We put a free sign (that was hard!!) in our yard for about 4 hours and got rid of a couple more things, but ended up taking all of our unsold items to the Salvation Army. Kelsey was sweet to remind me that she was happy other people less fortunate then us were now going to have toys to play with and clothes to wear.

At the end of the day I was beat! We had invited a family of 6 to come over for dinner the next day though so I went back to work and went shopping for food to have an Easter-type dinner we never had the week prior. Blake and the kids were helpful to help me prepare the house and the meal. We had glazed ham, cheesy potatoes, cranberry jello salad, rolls, corn, carrots, and had root beer floats for dessert. We had a wonderful visit and all the work was worth it to be able to serve someone else. She, has just gotten into town the night before serving a member of her family that had health problems. It was nice to be able to give something to her, when she had been serving someone else all week. It was also a good lesson for my kids to see the value in service.

Easter 2014!

As the years have gone by and as we have had more kids, I've become more simplistic in everything I do, holidays included. I've learned that the kids really don't know any difference about the amount of effort, time and money I put into things as long as I at least do something. Blake has been a good coach in helping me realize this which has been good because simplicity is very un-Cami like. Granted there are times, I give in and go all out...did you read my April 2014 General Conference post?...but for the most part I try to remember simplicity makes for a more enjoyable, relaxing and, dare I say, cheaper event.

To further exemplify this point, tonight for FHE, there were no elaborate preparations like getting Easter eggs and filling them with symbols of Christ's last week in his life, no week long activities that mimicked the last days of the Savior's life; nope, we watched a couple of movies online about Jesus's Resurrection on the Mormon Channel and Blake and I talked to our kids about Christ and how important He is to each of us and the implications of what it means that He is resurrected and LIVES!. It was simple, spiritual, and meaningful. This isn't to say that doing the before-mentioned things aren't great, because they are!!! Like I said there are times to make an effort to go big if I feel it's in my family's best interest.

The Easter Bunny visited us on Saturday evening. The kids enjoyed a little easter egg hunt in the front yard then a large basket with little goodies in it from the dollar store including an inflatable sword, pail and shovel, sidewalk chalk, squirt guns, jump ropes, a hula hoop, and some candy. The kids were happy and excited.

Today we enjoyed a beautiful meeting at church. I had fun getting my girls prettied up for the occasion as did they :). For dinner we had curry and I had a dessert with yogurt, cool whip, raspberries, and a package of vanilla pudding. It was a hit. I am so thankful for my Savior! I Love Him and it's because of Him that I get my family forever.

General Conference April 2014

General Conference has always been important and special to me. In my teenage years it felt like Christmas. I yearned to hear the words of the prophets and was excited to heed their counsel. Since being a mother, it has become difficult to watch and enjoy conference like I used to, especially living outside of Utah where we have to rely on a good internet connection and a competent computer to participate.

In past conferences, I created a King Benjamin type environment by making a large tent for the kids to sit in to mimic the tents the people of King Benjamin erected when they listened to him speak from his tower near the temple. I also made use of resources online to print off activity packets. But this method was just not working for us. The kids were irreverent, they fought over who would get to sit where in the tent, the tent would fall apart, they got disinterested in their activities, etc. So I endeavored to search the internet and pray to find out what I could do to help my children be more reverent during conference and help them realize the importance and sacredness of the conference. I wanted to help them understand how significant it is to be able to listen to living prophets counsel us in our day.

I came across an idea that proved to be successful with my kids. I found it here . I changed it a little bit to better fit my family. Each of the pockets contain pictures of all the general authorities. When someone is speaking you place them on the podium and can write with a dry erase marker what they talked about. When they are finished speaking, you place them in their chair. There is also a map to place where new temples are announced, a place to put down the statistics of the church and a music section.

I added a Conference Cash section. The kids could earn conference cash by adhering to eight difference guidelines. They could then use cash to buy conference treats or privileges. I had complied a folder for the three girls with activity packets that matched their learning level. All of them had to take notes during each of the Apostles' talks. Kelsey wrote down what she learned. Mylee pasted and colored pictures with varying topics under the apostles pictures and Lanaea colored a train car with the apostle's name and picture on it found here

This method worked so perfectly with my kids!!! They sat and listened through all 4 sessions of general conference....8 hours!! Granted we were not free of arguing and sibling quarrels, but all in all it was pretty fantastic. I was even able to take notes during almost every talk. At the end of conference they kids got a prize if they had taken notes during each of the Apostle's talks. Kelsey got a giant coloring book, Lanaea got a barbie doll and Mylee got a jewelry set.

This conference was so great and I feel so uplifted and renewed after listening to the messages. I'm excited for the written talks to come out so I can better study them.

ABC Rodeo Texas Style

We took the kids to the ABC Rodeo this year. Honestly I was a little disappointed. I had high hopes for a true blue Texas Rodeo, but the kids loved it and that's all that mattered. Kayden was the most fun. He kept pointing at the animals and couldn't keep his eyes off the arena. The girls got a kick out of the Mutton Busting. Our tickets came with 5 free bags of popcorn which was a bonus too. Lanaea was being a stinker and wouldn't get in the pictures.
